A Career Change: To QTLS, Teacher Trainer Assessor/mentor with a Masters in Education

After 20 years in the industry and completing undergraduate and postgraduate qualifications, I decided I wanted a career change, so in 2010 I joined the University of Bolton as a PGDE student. Seven years on, I had completed my QTLS, become a Teacher Trainer Assessor and QTLS mentor. In addition, I had been promoted to the position of Senior Academic Programme Manager. As my Higher Education Institution grew, so did my role and responsibilities. As such, I felt it was time to reinvest in my knowledge and skills. Based on my previous experience, I knew the University of Bolton Education Team would help me to develop my educational management skills and knowledge. I contacted the team and we discussed my achievements since graduating, they advised me to join the Master in Education, Professional Pathway. The Education Team on the Masters programme made the students feel more like colleagues than students. They linked management concepts to educational scenarios. We discussed the challenges of meeting Government metrics and the joys of supporting students to achieve their qualifications. As students, we had access to industry and academic experts such as Dr Daniela Bacova, Prof David Hopkins and Susan Rabbitt, and we thrived on their passion for educational excellence. Did I need a masters to change the way I managed and developed my academic team? Absolutely! The strategies I implemented were a direct result of the knowledge gained throughout my studies. The impact of my masters was high achieving students and a team of outstanding, dedicated teachers.
