5 Writing Tips for Becoming a Fantastic Screenwriter

Screenwriting is an art form, and our degree can help you unlock your creativity…

Do you dream of turning your creative ideas into a Hollywood movie or a hit series? Writing for the screen is one of the most rewarding jobs in the entertainment industry, because you get to watch your stories come to life.

Many writers work in the background and take joy in seeing their imaginations on display through amazing productions and acting talent. If you love writing, the University of Bolton’s BA Hons Screenwriting and Media Production degree could be for you.

Our undergraduate course teaches you all the basic skills to succeed in film, TV and multi-platform media, with a big focus on writing and creativity. Here are some top writing tips to help you become the best in the game.

1. Start writing

It seems simple enough, but good writing is all about practice, and it’s also about expression. Learning to express yourself freely is the key, so write about anything and everything. Write poetry, write short stories, or write interesting quotes. Having a little black book of thoughts and ideas is one of the best writing tips if you often get stuck for inspiration.

2. Share your writing

Getting feedback for your writing is vital for your growth. Working with your peers also allows you to develop collaborative skills, which is very important in the film and TV industry. Every production requires teams of writers and producers working in harmony, so building your people skills is absolutely essential.

3. Immerse yourself in films

One of the best writing tips for aspiring screenwriters is to be fully immersed in the world of film and TV. Watching different film and television productions should be more than a hobby. It should be passion.

Don’t just watch the genres you’re interested in either. Inspiration comes from unexpected places, and appreciating every genre and creative style is the answer to developing your skills.

4. Have other interests

Although film and TV should be your main passion area, it’s also important to have other interests. Inspiration can be sought from all around, including from everyday life experiences, from all forms of art and entertainment, from shared stories with friends and family, and from observing others in different cultures and social settings.

5. Grow your network

Being a good writer is just as much about being a networker. Who you know matters too, and having connections in the industry can create amazing opportunities. The same applies for your student network at university, and having plenty of people to call on for brainstorming, feedback and student productions.

That’s why at the University of Bolton, we put so much emphasis on collaborative projects and multi-disciplinary skills development. Our friendly and supportive campus also makes it easy to meet others with the same interests as you, giving you a chance to enhance soft skills.

We’ve also been voted No.1 for Student Satisfaction in the North West* for three years running, so there’s nowhere better to begin your journey into writing for the screen.
