02/02/2023
2022 was great for special effects and the year ended in style with the release of the popular Netflix series, Wednesday; the spin-off show for the Addams Family! In a show dedicated to ‘outcasts’ with the ability to turn others into stone, transform into werewolves and vampires, and even predict the future through psychic visions, its popularity has already confirmed a second season to be released in 2024!
If special and visual effects are something that fascinates and excites you, and you want to learn the professional skills to turn the show’s villain, Tyler into the Hyde, then a master’s degree could be ideal to further your creative skills and development.
Let’s explore some of the best films and shows of 2022 that were known for their special effects:
Avatar 2
James Cameron, the co-producer of Avatar, is often referred to as the ‘pioneer of cinema’. Since the release of the original film in 2009, it’s fair to say that the release of Avatar 2 in December 2022 sparked a lot of excitement among viewers. Considering the original film was ground-breaking in the special effects field, the sequel was full of potential; and it didn’t disappoint! Changing the game once again, with 90% of the film being computer-generated, this has left questions being asked about where visual effects will go in the future; the possibilities certainly seem endless!
Jurassic World 3
Jurassic World is a prime example of a film that created its own reality. Producers quickly realised that it would be too difficult to physically go and film in a theme park, so they did the next best thing; built a ride themselves! With help from the special effects supervisor, Paul Corbould, they created a downhill piece of track that was around 40 feet tall for the gyrosphere to slide down.
Jurassic World 3 is proof that special effects aren’t just influential in terms of transforming actors into monsters, it goes far beyond that and can even transform a set into the life and soul of a story.
Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse 3
Released in April 2022, the Spider-Man sequel to the 2018 academy award-winning animated film was highly anticipated and praised for its innovative visuals and animations. After all, how would you see a popular superhero with the ability to work up walls using their spider web as a superpower if it wasn’t for the creativity of special effects? However, this film went above and beyond in terms of its visual effects. With it being filmed entirely in IMAX 3D, viewers got to benefit from an action-packed viewing, providing a much more immersive experience.
