Why Doing a Masters Degree was the Best Decision I Made

After I returned to study as a mature student following a twenty-year gap, my only aim was to gain a degree.

The time during my undergraduate degree went way too fast for me to enjoy the experience. I was too busy getting used to the academic life, worrying about assignments, creating a balance between home responsibilities and study, etc.

Starting my masters was a whole different experience. By now, I knew I could do it. I knew how to manage both, academic and home responsibilities. Hence, I was more relaxed.

My international management masters course had over 90% of international students from various backgrounds and different aspects of lives. Some were either big international business people or some were there to progress their career prospects. But together made me feel like a family. Very special friendships and bonding were created among all of us. We would help each other with our work, share personal, professional and academic problems.

As their course representative, I was always there for them, trying to solve their issues with course content, exam results or even advise on personal problems! Most of our friendship has continued even though the course has finished.

The dedicated lecturer’s contribution to my awesome experience is also undeniable. They made me feel so comfortable in voicing my concerns or erasing doubts about the quality of my work.

For instance, Fredrick Agboma, programme leader would always boost my confidence by stating how we are the masters of the subject. His support in arranging an informal graduation ceremony for our group after we submitted our dissertation, is another example of the length the team would go to create excellent student experience.

Why was doing the masters best decision I made? Because I would have never gained these experiences without returning to do a masters. These experiences made me realise how wonderful our world and its different cultures are. We may all look unique, but we feel and think the same. We truly live in a global village!
