Why Biomedical Engineering is in the Top 40% of Careers for Career Satisfaction

When determining what career path to go down, you need to consider how happy you will be in your job role. The average person spends 90,000 hours working over their lifetime, so finding a job you enjoy is crucial. According to a study by Career Explorer, biomedical engineering is in the top 40% careers for career satisfaction. Biomedical engineers rated their happiness as 3.4 out of 5. So, what is it about being a biomedical engineer that makes people so content?

Salary

One reason why biomedical engineers are satisfied in their job role is that it pays well. Your salary will depend on whether you work for the NHS or privately. The Agenda for Change (AfC) pay rates tend to cover jobs in the NHS. Entry-level salaries are Band 5, meaning they range from £24,907 to £30,615. You can then progress to Band 6, with salaries between £31,365 and £37,890 and progress further to higher bands, as you become more experienced. If you qualify in biomedical engineering, also known as BME engineering, and work in the private sector, the average pay is £64,000 per annum.

A meaningful job role

Another reason biomedical engineers give for job satisfaction is that the role gives them a sense of purpose. This is a meaningful career, which can have a significant impact on the lives of others. As a biomedical engineer, you will research, design, and develop medical products and modify equipment used hospitals and the community. You can make a difference in the quality of life and lifespan of individuals across the world, and this reason alone creates immense career satisfaction.

Jobs are widely available across the United Kingdom in biomedical engineering, meaning you will have plenty of options once you finish university.
