What skills does a social worker need?

Social Workers focus on providing the necessary support to enable vulnerable people to retain independence and quality of life.

Life experiences, illness and injury, can make it more challenging for us to undertake everyday tasks. The right care and support improve the chances of turning the situation around and live life to the full. Have you got what it takes to make a difference?

Social Work demands high emotional intelligence

Studying Social Work will cover a diverse range of theory, training, analysis, planning and practice. At the University of Bolton, we have recreated a clinical environment to provide realistic situations for exploring preventative measures, safeguarding and care provision.

There are, however, some skills that are difficult to teach. We look for students with high emotional intelligence, an innate skill. Those with high emotional intelligence can identify, manage and harness their own emotions. They naturally pick up on the non-verbal communication of others and respond accordingly.

Individuals with high emotional intelligence typically show greater tolerance and empathy with others. They are also better able to set boundaries and undertake activities to maintain their own self-care and resilience.

Beyond a caring personality; meeting the demands of social care

A caring nature is an asset in social care, but with demanding caseloads, other skills are essential. Our students also learn to be highly organised, critical thinkers. They have to be solutions-focused; making quick and confident decisions about which available options are right for that individual.

Knowledge of policy, regulations and industry advances sit alongside data analysis and collaboration to inform care planning and delivery. There is no doubt that this is a challenging profession, but our Social Work Courses at the University of Bolton are designed to equip you fully.

If you thrive on seeing your actions make a tangible difference, there are plenty of Social Workers vacancies to be filled.
