What are the graduate prospects for Biomedical Scientist students?

As new drugs and treatments are developed, the demand for Biomedical Scientists is increasing. The world of biomedical science offers both a wide variety of roles and excellent rates of pay.

Medical biology careers span the spectrum of medical sciences. Since the subject area is so broad, the available career options are similarly vast. Whether your focus is on disease diagnosis and treatment or developing a new medicine, medical biology careers are becoming increasingly important to keep up with the needs of our growing society.

A day in the life of a biomedical scientist will typically see you staring into a microscope, analyzing the various samples brought into the lab, although this will vary dramatically depending on your specialism. You could be investigating and diagnosing patient illnesses such as HIV, cancer, diabetes, meningitis or even food poisoning.

Starting salaries for biomedical scientists in the NHS range from £22,000 to £28,000. With experience and specialist knowledge, you can expect to earn a salary from up to £35,000.

As a senior biomedical scientist, you can expect to earn up to £48,000. Salaries for consultant biomedical scientists, who have reached the top of their profession, are higher. If the NHS employs you, you'll generally work a standard 37.5 hour week, but a flexible approach to work is required to cover day, evening, and weekend work.

Does the profession of being a biomedical scientist sound appealing to you? Not only a great starting salary with good career prospects but a varied and exciting role where no day is the same.

At the University of Bolton, our Medical Biology courses allow students to gain the graduating prospects for a biomedical scientist but also other careers which help develop new medicines.
