Our favourite cultural activities in Bolton

Our English degree at the University of Bolton has ranked No.1 for Student Satisfaction for the last three years. Join this course and you’ll benefit from strong links with creative organisations, as well as opportunities to have your work published in our recognised literary magazine, The Bolton Review.

You’ll delve into a huge breadth of literature throughout this English degree, and also have the chance to explore the rich heritage of Bolton, and the North West, here are some of our favourite cultural activities around the town.

Literature Live
The University of Bolton and Bolton Library and Museums come together each year to programme a series of free Literature Live events for students on our English and Creative Writing courses. While this is currently online, previous events have included talks with award-winning writers and poets, such as Rosie Garland and Evan Jones.

Bolton Octagon Theatre
There are lots of cultural venues across the region, including the Bolton Octagon Theatre, which is home to plays and performances, often with a strong community focus. While the venue has been closed for redevelopment, it’s currently hosting lots of online performances and is due to reopen in early 2021.

Bolton Art Gallery, Library and Museum
This spectacular venue has something for everyone, but for English literature enthusiasts, it’s the special archives at the Bolton Art Gallery, Library and Museum that will be of particular interest. Delve into the history of the area through rare books and documents and access the Walt Whitman collection, with letters, publications and photos related to the American poet.
