University of Bolton Social Media Networks Rules

Please read these rules carefully.

The rules outline what the university considers acceptable and unacceptable content and inform our approach to moderating our online presence. We may update the rules from time to time, so please read them before posting a comment.

By posting on one or more of our sites, you agree to abide by these rules.

The University of Bolton embraces the open and collaborative social media environment. Your comments are welcome on our sites and we look forward to exchanging knowledge and ideas with you.

Rule 1: We welcome debate. We don’t want to stop people discussing topics about which they are passionate, but we do ask users to find ways of sharing their views that do not feel hostile. Please consider how your comment could be received by others. You can express a strong opinion but do not forget that you are legally responsible for what you submit.

Rule 2: We acknowledge critical comments. We welcome your opinion of articles we publish, but will not allow persistent misrepresentation of the university to be published on its social media platforms. We will distinguish between constructive arguments and smear tactics.

Rule 3: You must not make or encourage comments that are or may be interpreted as:

  • Defamatory, false or misleading
  • Racist, sexist, homophobic or discriminatory against any religions or other groups
  • Insulting, threatening or abusive
  • Obscene or of a sexual nature

Rule 4: You must not use our sites for:

  • Inserting links to websites or submit content that would be an infringement of copyright
  • Promotion of any products or services or for any other commercial purpose
  • Sponsorship, petition, campaign, scheme or investigation

The university will only support commercial posts where the offer made is of genuine interest to our students; for example, discounts for NUS cardholders. We will remove posts from organisations offering services we deem to be inappropriate.

Rule 5: Keep it relevant. We know some conversations can be wide-ranging, but if you post something which is unrelated to the original topic it may be removed, in order to keep the thread on track. This also applies to queries or comments about moderation, which should not be posted as comments.

Rule 6: Respect others privacy. You must not submit confidential or private information. For example, you must not upload telephone numbers, email addresses or other contact details of any person.

Rule 7: Comments that violate these rules may be removed. If we do remove comments we will remove whole posts, or where necessary, whole threads. If you are aware that content has been removed, you must not deliberately resubmit the same content.

Rule 8: We reserve the right to block anyone at our sole discretion. Some of the reasons we may do so:

  • Persistent violation of these rules
  • Comments that abuse other authors, users, staff or any other individual

If you are blocked, you must not attempt to submit content using someone else’s account.

If you would like to discuss the operation of our sites with us, please contact us on news@bolton.ac.uk.
