My formal education has been entirely within the borough of Bolton. My higher education has been entirely here at the University of Bolton, of which I am very proud and was completed part-time. I was a student representative for Bolton Institute of Higher Education when it was awarded University status in 2004. I was studying for an MBA at the time. My previous work experience before moving into education was in Estate Agency where I was a partner in a small business.

I am currently a member of the QAA’s Access Qualifications Development Group which is an expert advisory group which reports to the Access Recognition and Licensing Committee (ARLC). It reviews and develops proposals for revising The Access to Higher Education Diploma and credit specifications; decides how proposals for change should be consulted on or tested, and considers the outcomes; and undertakes any other activities relating to developing the Access to HE Diploma that may be requested by the ARLC.

My professional duties involve responsibility for quality assurance and enhancement within the School of Education and Psychology. In addition I am responsible for programmes within the PUTC and the co-ordination of all Access to HE Diplomas delivered here at the University. Access to HE Diplomas are a fast-track route into higher education for those without A levels or formal qualifications. These courses are designed to link directly into the University’s widening participation agenda. I also serve on a number of university wide committees and panels. I have particular interest in curriculum development and equality and diversity within HE.

My research informs my teaching and professional activities by being directly-transferrable to the classroom across all programmes with which I have involvement.

Research Interests and Research Subject Specialisms

Human Resource Management – I have particular interest in the role of developing the individual and the organisation to maximise an organisation’s effectiveness and link with its strategy. Learning is a key driver in my view to maximising an organisation’s effectiveness. I now apply this interest to educational settings in my current teaching role. I also have a keen interest in all aspects of management and leadership and how they relate to developing a learning organisation.
