Teaching responsibilities

As a Senior Lecturer and Programme Leader for the BEng (Hons) Civil Engineering course, I am responsible for delivering the Soil Mechanics, Geotechnical Engineering, Contaminated Land and Environmental Management modules. Since 2013 have led the civil engineering team. From 2015 I assumed Academic Group Coordinator responsibility for Recruitment and Retention in the School of Engineering.


I have 19 years' academic and over 22 years’ industrial experience in ground investigation, contaminated land and geotechnical consultancy, including work with a 6,000-strong global consultancy dealing with geotechnical issues for major gas, coal, onshore and offshore wind turbine and waste-to-energy power plants, high-rise inner city developments and projects requiring deep excavations.

Having completed a PhD in 1985 in Materials/Geotechnical/Highways Engineering, my research interests have since focused on the strength of clays, sub-standard soils with waste carpet fibres, contaminated land assessment and remediation, modelling of ground for tunnelling, heavy foundations, earthworks control and seismic impacts.

Other Key Professional Activities and Development Committee Member of North West Geotechnical Group (NWGG) of the Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE) for since 2011, and Chair of ICE NWGG since 2015.

Acted as External Examiner for University of Salford from 2010 to 2012 for MSc/PgD in Sustainable Development, Energy and Management and MSc/PgD in Water, Energy and Waste programmes. Currently External examiner for BEng(Hons) Civil Engineering Programme at Leeds Beckett University (2015 to 2018).

Member of Association of Civil Engineering Department  Heads (ACED) Committee since 2015.

Member of Editorial Board of the. Journal of Earth Sciences and Geotechnical Engineering. International Scientific Press, since 2011.
