University partners with Centre for Opposition Studies
Posted on Friday 24th March 2017
The University of Bolton has today announced a partnership with the Centre for Opposition Studies to advance the academic research of political studies in the UK and overseas.
The agreement brings the Centre for Opposition Studies to the University in order to pursue academic research, project work and to develop new teaching programmes in political studies.
The Centre for Opposition Studies was established in 2010 by Nigel Fletcher and Professor Mohammed Abdel-Haq as an independent, cross-party research centre, based in Westminster. Three former UK party leaders have served as its honorary presidents: Michael Howard, Neil Kinnock and the late Charles Kennedy.
The Centre organises regular lectures and seminars, and has undertaken project work on democratic government and opposition overseas sponsored by the UK Foreign Office.
Major speakers at its events over the years have included Lord Howard of Lympne, Sir Vince Cable, Baroness Royall of Blaisdon, The Rt. Hon. Charles Clarke, Lord Lamont of Lerwick, Jon Cruddas and Sir Lynton Crosby.
Announcing the new partnership, the Vice-Chancellor of the University of Bolton, Professor George E Holmes DL, said:
‘I am delighted to welcome the Centre for Opposition Studies at the University of Bolton.
‘This partnership is a unique academic venture and we are looking forward to working with the Centre in the years ahead.’
Chairman of the Centre for Opposition Studies, Professor Mohammed Abdel-Haq, said:
‘We are proud and excited to bring the Centre for Opposition Studies to the University of Bolton.
‘Originally our endeavours were to establish an institute dedicated to political opposition. That original aim remains clearer than ever, both in the UK and overseas. But the Centre's interest has developed in order to address the need to study government and other areas of political studies.
‘We are very grateful for the leadership and vision of the Vice Chancellor of the University of Bolton Professor George E Holmes DL, which has made this unique partnership possible.’
