In short, the aim is to support the strategic initiatives of the University of Bolton.
The three main functions that enable the DIA to accomplish its aims are as follows:
- “Task and Finish” - supporting the delivery of Key Strategic Priorities, on demand, through specific projects.
- “Embedding” - ensuring that strategic projects are handed over and embedded in the normal operations of key academic areas.
- “Maintenance’ – maintaining a set of activities that are continuous for DIA (for example, communications, publications, public relations, events, CSR, alumni, fundraising, etc.)
Over the past 12 months, the DIA, along with the Vice Chancellor’s office, have been supporting the promotion of the extensive range of development of the University. A few examples are the National Centre for Motorsport Engineering (NCME), the Queen’s Specialist Building incorporating dental sciences and the Stoller Building, which houses the University Technical College (UTC), Bolton.
The National Centre for Motorsport Engineering (NCME) is being developed with an aim be the UK’s choice university provision for motorsport engineering. NCME is going to be a integral part of the new Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) building that will be situated next to Bolton College on Deane Road. It will offer exemplary academic programmes that are student-led and industry-driven, aimed at creating outstanding engineers, who will take lead in the automotive and motorsport industry. As part of NCME’s development, a vision has been formed, where students will embrace academic rigour of mathematics, physics and engineering and concurrently apply this knowledge using state of the arts facilities.
Queens Specialist Building
The University of Bolton is working in collaboration with Sparkle Dental Laboratories forming a sector-leading learning environment for dental science students bringing new jobs to Bolton.
Located in the Queens Specialist Building, Sparkle Dental Labs will be based adjacent to the University’s brand new £0.5 million purpose-built dental science teaching facilities. These facilities have been developed to deliver degree programmes in dental science and integrate with the University’s vision to invest in dental science at higher education level. Sparkle Dental Labs have further invested £300,000 in creating state-of-the-art laboratories that will provide valuable work experience for full-time undergraduate students.
In September 2015, Bolton witnessed the opening of the £10 million Stoller Building, home to the University Technical College (UTC) Bolton. UTC Bolton is a free school delivering secondary and further education for pupils aged 14-19 years, which the University supports. It is sponsored, governed, supported and lead by the University of Bolton. It is the first school in England to be located on a university campus and to date it is the most successful UTC to date in terms of student, where on its opening, September 2015, it surpassed all expectations and was oversubscribed. UTC Bolton is focused on clinical health sciences and professional engineering and through the GCSE and A-level curriculum it will create the next generation of doctors, dentist pharmacists, healthcare proof engineers, scientists and entrepreneurs.
UTC Bolton uses the Teaching intensive and research informed strategic aims of the University to deliver its curriculum using a one million pound specialist equipment facility, where it houses a full professional training laboratory for dentists, moot hospital, robotics programming laboratory, electronics laboratory and a pharmacy, amongst others.
