Effective study skills are a vital element in achieving academic success on your course. To obtain a good quality degree, you not only need a good understanding of your subject, but you also require a range of academic and study skills that help you to further develop and illustrate your knowledge. These skills are complex and require practice.

Although you may have developed effective study techniques at school or college, being at university poses some new and unique challenges. Studying at university is an exciting and rewarding experience, but if you are new to higher education, or have not studied for some time, you may find it useful to brush up your study skills.

The Library provides an online study skills tutorial called LEAP Online. LEAP Online is designed to support University of Bolton students with various aspects of academic study, such as finding appropriate information for your assignments, writing essays or reports, right through to writing a dissertation. Each section contains information about the topic, demonstration videos, and activities for you to practise your knowledge, top tips and other recommended resources.

If you are having difficulties finding the help you need you can contact your Subject Librarian or the Help Desk (01204 903094 or email the Subject Help Desk)

Outside the Library you can get extra help from the Student Liaison Officers to who work within each Faculty. They offer information, advice and guidance on an individual basis, on a wide range of academic and pastoral issues. They also deliver ‘bite size’ study skills sessions throughout the first trimester.
