Audio Frequency Induction Loop System

The University of Bolton Library has a portable Audio Frequency Induction Loop System (AFILS) available for students to borrow. You may sign it out from the Library Desk, which is located on the right as you come in through the main Library entrance.

The AFILS is a portable hearing loop which allows anyone using a hearing aid set to the "T" position to hear speech. Instructions on how to work it are in the box.

Fixed hearing loops are fitted at both the Information and Library Desks. If you are having trouble hearing what is said at either of these desks, please make sure your hearing aid is set to the "T" position.

To use the AFILS:

Press the On/Off switch. The AFILS will give a beep, and the green AFILS on light will come on.

Position the AFILS on the desk so the side with the hearing loop logo is facing the listeners, and the panel with the microphone is facing the speaker.

Hearing aid users will need to switch their hearing aids to the "T" position.

The speaker can see how well the AFILS is transmitting their voice by the AFILS working light indicators:

  • 1 & 2 = normal
  • 2 & 3 = too loud

The AFILS portable hearing loop should be charged and ready for use. If it isn't, plug it into a nearby power socket to recharge. You will still be able to use it while it is recharging.

If there is no available power source, or it won't work at all, please bring it back to the Library Desk.

Extending the Operating Time:

The AFILS is designed to switch itself off after 10 minutes. You can extend this to 30 minutes or 60 minutes by pressing and holding the On/Off switch.

Release the On/Off switch when the AFILS working lights indicate you have reached your desired duration:

  • 1 = 10 minutes
  • 2 = 30 minutes
  • 3 = 60 minutes

Please return the AFILS to the Library Desk when you have finished with it.
