Information Literacy
What is Information Literacy?
Information Literacy is a set of attributes which individuals need in today's information-oriented society. Learning from information resources has always been at the heart of any course of study. However, increased access to computers and to information from a variety of sources, and in a variety of formats, highlights the need for information skills in everyday life, and lifelong learning as well as in formal education.
Information Literacy is identifying when and why you need information; understanding how it is organised and identifying the best sources; then critically evaluating, using and sharing it in an ethical manner.
Why do I need to be Information Literate?
Information literacy is an essential academic skill. It creates independent students who do not have to rely on being 'spoon fed' by their tutors. Information literate students can critically analyse the information they find, and use it in the most productive way.
Information Literacy improves the quality of your learning; and it is an essential skill for you to take with you into your working lives.
We all need to use consumer information (for example to buy a car or a vacuum cleaner, to book a holiday) and being information literate will make this a much more efficient process
