Poetry in the Age of Revolutions

Drawing on material from all the arts, this session will introduce students to some of the profound shifts in thinking which occur as the Eighteenth century "Age of Enlightenment" (or "Age of Reason"), gives way to the Romantic period. The session will provide essential background for the meaningful study of the poetry of the English Romantics, and will include reading and analysis of one or two poems in the light of these seismic shifts.

Reading Shakespeare/Performing Shakespeare

This session will examine a short piece of a Shakespeare text in detail and open up discussion as to approaches useful when considering the plays in performance. Consideration will be given to the performance context and to practical questions of acting and delivery.
