The University of Bolton has over £500,000 to award to students through the National Scholarship Programme every year. There are a total of 182 scholarships worth £3000 each to be given to students through fee waivers, benefits and financial scholarships.

Eligibility

Students must have commenced on an undergraduate HE course of study at University of Bolton in September 2012 or later.

The National Scholarship is available to both UK and EU students, both full and part-time. However, for EU and part-time students there will be a partial award available for a pro-rata fee waiver only (the maintenance element will not be available to EU students).

The National Scholarship may be awarded to students who are studying highest cost, (Band 1 courses with tuition fees of £8,400), qualifying courses (Science, Technology, Engineering or Mathematics, with the exception of Sport and Psychology) and whose household income is less than £25,000.

The National Scholarship may also be awarded to students who are leaving a Care background and whose household income is less than £25,000. Students must have lived in a Care setting for a minimum of twelve months within the last five years and will need to show evidence of this.

The following categories of students are not eligible to apply for a National Scholarship Award:

  • Students “topping-up” from a Foundation Degree, HND or equivalent course.
  • Students transferring from another institution.
  • Students whose tuition fees are paid or part-paid through a sponsorship arrangement, for example by an employer.

How to apply

When you have made the University of Bolton your firm choice through UCAS, an email inviting applications for the scholarship will be sent to you. This will usually take place from March 2012 onwards. The application form will be available to download from this page on the University of Bolton website over the next few days.

You will need to supply any relevant evidence with your completed application form. Where the evidence is not provided or does not meet the stated requirements the application will not be considered. The information provided will be used solely for the purpose of assessing eligibility for a scholarship and will not be shared with any party not involved in this assessment process.

The closing date for applications will be Friday 8 June 2012. A selection panel will consider completed applications received and make the awards. We will start to confirm the outcome of applications from Wednesday 25 July 2012. The decision of the selection panel is final.

Please note that even if you apply for a National Scholarship Award you should still apply to Student Finance England for the full tuition fee for your course of study (if you are applying for a tuition fee loan), as even though you may fulfil the eligibility for the award this does not guarantee you will receive one due to the restricted number of awards available.

Payments

The scholarship will be paid in the following three methods:

  1. a fee waiver of £1,200 in year 1 of the course only
  2. a range of benefits to the value of £800 to include for example reduced Halls of Residence fees, provision of specialist equipment, travel costs for study abroad
  3. financial scholarship of £1,000, payable on successful completion of year 1 of the course of study

Additional terms and conditions

Students in receipt of a National Scholarship Award cannot apply for a Fee Waiver in addition in their first year of study, however qualifying students may be eligible for a Band 1 Fee Waiver in subsequent years of the course.

Please note that meeting the essential eligibility criterion does not equate to an entitlement to a scholarship.

National Scholarship Awards will not be available to individuals who are ordinarily resident in Scotland, Wales or Northern Ireland.
