Overview

After a career in the NHS of over 20 years, 13 of which were spent working in the community as a health visitor, Jane started her teaching career in 1998 as a community practice teacher. Jane completed her PGCE in 2002, having taught part-time as a guest lecturer on various Health Studies programmes at the universities of Salford, Manchester and Bolton, and began her full-time teaching career at Bolton as a module tutor on Nurse Prescribing and Health Visiting. 

Jane developed the teaching and supporting learning pathways for NMC registrants from Mentorship to full Lecturer/Practice Educator status at the University of Bolton and began teaching on the teacher training programmes in 2003.  Jane worked collaboratively with NHS Northwest and other universities in Greater Manchester to develop the Preparation for Mentorship online.   Jane has held dual roles for a number of years in health studies and education; the professional development unit and education and is now full time in the School of Education & Psychology.

Academic Interests and Roles

Jane’s main academic interests are higher and professional education; assessment and feedback; e-learning and blended learning approaches.

Jane is the Programme Leader for the Postgraduate Certificate in Teaching and Learning in Higher and Professional Education and the Practice Teacher/Practice Educator course. Jane is also the lead for the University’s HEA accredited CPD pathway for Professional Recognition.  Jane has developed the Postgraduate Certificate at Bolton for distance/online delivery.

Jane is the lead for mentor and assessor training for the Initial Teacher Education (ITE 14+) Programmes and has developed online mentor and assessor training.  She works closely with the ITE team monitoring and evaluating mentor and assessor training.

Jane supervises Masters in Education dissertation students whose studies have a particular focus on work-based learning and higher or professional education.  She is a member of the University’s Education Committee and the School’s Academic Review Board. She is a regular panel member on validation panels both on and off campus.
