The Postgraduate Research Experience Survey (PRES) is a national survey of postgraduate research students inviting them to comment on their course and experience. It is an online survey which is open to students undertaking postgraduate research courses (e.g. MPhil, PhD), whether studying in the UK or at one of our overseas centres.

The PRES 2017 will launch at the University of Bolton on 8th March 2017.

Why should I take part?

The Postgraduate Research Experience Survey is your chance to tell us about your experience of being a research postgraduate student at the University of Bolton. The results help us compare how we are doing with other institutions, to make changes that will improve what we do in future and to keep doing the things that you value, helping us to improve the student experience.

Every eligible University of Bolton student who takes part in the PRES 2017 will be entered into a prize draw with three cash prizes (£50, £30 and £20). Winners will be notified by email by 14th July 2017 and the results will be announced on the University website by 28th July 2017.

What does it cover?

PRES includes questions on:

  • Supervision;
  • Resources;
  • Research community;
  • Progress and assessment;
  • Responsibilities;
  • Research skills and professional development;
  • Opportunities;
  • Overall experience;
  • Student support services;
  • Motivations;
  • Demographic details.

What happens to the results?

Your feedback is important. The survey is carried out by institutions across the country. This means we can compare your experience against similar postgraduates at other institutions to see if we are supporting your learning as we should. We use the findings to make changes that will improve what we do in the future and to keep doing the things that you value. This will help improve your experience and that of students like you.

PRES was last run in 2015 and the University of Bolton achieved a response rate of 30%.

The national findings from PRES 2015 are available here.

Is it anonymous?

The survey is confidential and no-one will be able to identify you from any results. The survey asks that any comments you make should not identify yourself or any specific members of staff.

What do I need to do?

Eligible students will receive an email with a personalised link to the online questionnaire during the week commencing 6th March 2017. Simply click on the link and complete the online form. The survey is open until 18th May 2017.
