Ashley Howell - new SU President
Thursday 30 July 2009
Ashley was elected President of the Students' Union at Bolton and took up post on 1July, just before he graduated from a BSc (hons) degree in Games Design. As President he is responsible for the general running of the union. He also represents the union on external panels and committees and at official functions and public occasions. In addition, he works with the other sabbatical officers to give the students the best possible support and experience during their time at Bolton.
'The Students' Union can help students in many different ways' said Ashley. 'There is an Advice Unit which can give advice on many different problems that students may face, including specialist advice on issues such as immigration. The Vice-president of Education and Representation, Rob Church will deal with academic issues and both Rob and I are here to help with any other problems that students may have.'
For Ashley, choosing to study at Bolton was a straightforward decision. 'Games Design isn't available at many universities which narrowed down my range of choices' he said. 'But when I came along to Bolton and saw the excellent facilities I felt I could really see myself as a student here.
'I settled in very quickly and, because of the University's relatively small size, it was easy to get to know other students and teaching staff. I could chat to my lecturer about anything on the course or ask him questions if I had any issues or concerns. There is a sense of community about the place because everyone knows each other and you'll find yourself mixing with people from all different courses. I soon made many friends with students from other courses and different year groups.
'In terms of its location, the university is well placed because it is within walking distance from everything you need, whether its food and clothes shopping, music and electronics or entertainment and the theatre.'
