Student Volunteering

Volunteering is simple. It's about giving your time to do something useful, make new friends and really make changes in your life and the lives of others. In return you get the satisfaction of time and effort well spent.

In addition volunteering is a unique opportunity for students :-

  • to increase their knowledge, skills and abilities
  • to enhance employability prospects
  • to understand and appreciate the diversity of our society, and
  • to work in partnership with communities for mutual benefit

getting started

  • think about what you want from volunteering – new skills, fun, the chance to contribute to a cause?
  • think about what you have to offer – enthusiasm, work skills, life skills?
  • work out how much time you have to give, and how many times a week or month
  • browse! The best way to find out what's available is to do some searches, try our Get Started  page on this site.
  • ask questions – don't be put off
  • make an appointment

Students volunteer for a huge number of reasons from wanting to make a difference to simply having fun. However, volunteers also gain an extensive portfolio of skills and experience which can be crucial after graduation. Developing and recognising skills such as communication, management, problem-solving, leadership and teamwork through volunteering not only develops key skills but also enhances employability.

academic benefits

For those wishing to take advantage of additional training, a number of possibilities exist; some students may wish to consider taking a 20 credit Volunteering Module offered by the University (an elective module), whilst others may decide to undertake specialist training offered by local organisations. (e.g. mentoring, befriending, mediation, St Johns Ambulance etc).
