'Bite Size' Study Skills sessions are available from February 2012.

 

Information about the 'Bite Size' Sessions:

The Student Liaison Officers aim to make each 1 hour session informative and interactive. Each session will be delivered as indicated below.  If you are a new student or you would like to improve your study skills please don't hesitate to join us. 

 

How to book

To book a place on a session(s) of your choice please email: slo@bolton.ac.uk| Please advise your student number and the session(s) you would like to attend. We will send a confirmation email to acknowledge your booking. You can also drop in on the day but a place is not guaranteed as those who have booked will be given priority.

 

Descriptions and availability of our 'Bite Size' sessions:

 

How to Tackle an Essay

You will be engaging with the component parts of a basic essay with some reference to the differences between an essay and a report.

Available Teaching Week 1 at the following dates/times:

Monday 6th February 12pm-1pm, Room D1-08 or

Tuesday 7th February 1pm-2pm, Room D1-46 or

 

Advanced Essay Writing

You will be given the opportunity to work in groups to discuss the marking of sample essays and agree a group grade and rationale. The results will then be discussed within the session. This exercise aims to enhance the future critique of your own essays.

Referencing and Plagiarism 

 If you are unsure about using Harvard referencing or worried about plagiarising then this session will help to guide you.

Available Teaching Week 2 at the following dates/times:

 Monday 13th February 12pm-1pm, Room D1-08 or

Tuesday 14th February 1pm-2pm, Room D1-46 or

Thursday 16th February 12pm-1pm, Room D1-08

 

 

Report Writing  

 This session will advise you on the basic structure of a report and what each section should contain.

Academic Writing – What's That?  

If you're unsure about the difference between descriptive and critical writing, this session offers activities and ideas that will help you to present a well balanced response in future.

Thursday 23rd February, 12pm-1pm, Room D1-08.

   

Oral Presentations : The 'Fear Factor'   

The 'Fear Factor' can undermine performance when giving an oral presentation.  This session addresses the fear of presenting to groups and offers some strategies for success.

Basic Maths

Do you want to refresh your basic maths skills?  This session will give you an overview of basic maths and will include some examples for you to try.  We will look at graphs, fractions, ratios and more!

Available Teaching Week 4 at the following dates/times:

Thursday 1st March, 12pm-1pm, Room D1-08.

 

Research Techniques

This session will help you to understand the importance of applying effective research techniques.  We will look at the purpose and types of research, data collection and how to take a systematic approach.

Tuesday 6th March, 1pm-2pm, Room D1-46

 

Search Strategies  

This session will help you to identify key concept words within assignment questions and explain how to begin your research.  We will look at how searches can be narrowed and expanded and we will give you a few top tips.
