I've lost my student card, what do I do?

Pay £10 to the Cashiers Office, bring the receipt to Student Services and we will print another. If it has been stolen there is no charge if you have a crime number. This can also be arranged by telephone or email.

Do I have to pay Council Tax?

If you are a full time student you don't pay. Register with your local council for your exemption. Students who live outside Bolton, Salford or Manchester will need a certificate from Student Services.

How do I contact a member of staff?

Email or telephone using the University staff search. There is a courtesy phone (internal calls only) in the Student Centre and at Main Reception Deane Campus.

Is there an advisor available after 5pm?

Yes! Monday to Thursday during term time there is an advisor based in the Library from 5pm to 9pm who can also be contacted by telephone on 01204 903733.

How do I register with a doctor or dentist?

Deane Medical Centre provides a Nurse Advisor Drop In Clinic every Wednesday between 10.30am and 12.00pm based in Student Services, Chancellor's Mall. No appointment neccessary. You can also register with Deane Medical Centre through the nurse clinic. The surgery is conveniently situated just around the corner from the university campus.

Lever Chambers Cente for Health is the main health centre based in the town centre. They can help you to find your nearest doctor or dentist. How do I change my address?

Do it online via the University website. There is also a form SDM2 available from Student Services if you are not a current Student.

Where do I make a payment?

At the Finance Office which is located in Chancellor's Mall at the rear of Cafe Athena (next to Athena shop). They accept most credit and debit cards over the counter or by telephoning 01204 903011. Cheques should be made payable to The University of Bolton and can be posted to the Financial Services Unit, The University of Bolton, Deane Road, Bolton BL3 5AB. In respect of tuition fees, it is possible to arrange to pay in three instalments over the academic year, or to apply to pay fees by Direct Debit. Forms are available from Student Services.

Can I pay my tuition fees by instalment or Direct Debit? What should I do if I can't pay?
Yes, you can pay in instalments or by Direct Debit. Details of how to do this will be given at your enrolment or at any other time at Student Services. Should you be unable to make a payment, please contact Financial Services on 01204 903011.

How do I apply for accommodation in Halls of Residence/Private Housing?

Applications and enquiries regarding accommodation can be made with the Accommodation Team based in the Student Centre or by  calling 01204 903484. A list of private accommodation in the Bolton area, which is updated monthly, is available from the Student Centre or can be posted out to you..

You can call into the Student Centre and fill out an application form. Where possible letters are done while you wait. You can also email a request to us and we will post it out to you.

What financial assistance is available to me as a part time student?
You may be eligible for a part time grant to help with fees and course costs if you are an undergraduate. You need to apply to Student Finance England|.

The first instalment of my student loan is late. Is there any financial assistance available to me?
You may be eligible to apply for a short-term Emergency Loan. This is a maximum of £500 and is repayable after 6 weeks or as soon as you receive the first instalment of your student loan. The Students' Union Advice Unit will arrange this. You can contact them by phone on 01204 900850 . If you have already received the first instalment of your student loan you will not be eligible for an emergency loan.

You can register with the Jobshop based in the Careers Service in the Student Centre. They can help with finding part time work while you study and finding work after graduation.

I am an international student, can I get a job?
If you are a student on a course that lasts for more than six months and you haven't got a stamp on your passport that prohibits you from working, you are now allowed to work without the Secretary of State's permission. However, the law says that you are not allowed to work for more than twenty hours a week during term time. During vacation you can work full time.

I am an international student, how do I get a National Insurance Number?

Applications for National Insurance Numbers can be made by telephoning 0845 600 0643.  You do not need to have received your National Insurance Number before you can start work.

I am an international student and wish to extend my visa, how do I do this?

Contact the Students' Union Advice Unit for advice on applying for your visa extension. Make an appointment with the Advisor by telephoning 01204 900850. You will also require a 'Request for a Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies (CAS)' letter. You will need to request this in person bringing your passport and visa documents with you to be scanned. Please contact Student Services for more information. Remember to request you CAS 1 month before you intend to apply for your visa extension as it will take at least 5 working days to be completed.

I'm finding hard to make ends meet. What should I do?

Contact our Student Funding Advisor on 01204 903497 for help with budgeting advice and to find out if there is any other funding available to you. The University may be able to help through the Access to Learning Fund which provides financial help to students who are in extreme financial hardship. Application forms are available from Student Services, by calling 01204 903733 or can be posted out.

I want to leave the Halls of Residence/Private Accommodation that I am living in but I've signed a contract. What can I do?
You will be liable for all the contracted fees whether or not you move to other accommodation.

Are there secure parking facilities for students?
Ther is limited parking on campus for students but this is at your own risk . Students can also use at the carpark adjacent to the Hollins Halls of Residence.

I am in receipt of State Benefits and wish to study full-time. Will my benefits be affected?
Yes - Depending on your circumstances, your eligibility and entitlement to Income Support, Job Seekers Allowance and/or Housing Benefit can be affected.

How do I obtain my Degree/Award Certificate?

With effect from February 2010 onwards, certificates will be posted out to students' home addresses within six weeks following the relevant examination board. It is essential therefore that you advise the University of any change to your home address. You can update your address electronically by visiting the University's website at www.bolton.ac.uk| select "Current Students" and then "My Details" and then select "Student Record". Alternatively, you can advise the address to which you require your certificate to be sent to by emailing tmc1@bolton.ac.uk| and giving your name, student I.D. number, date of birth and the course you completed.

If you graduated prior to November 2007 and have not collected your certificate, you can request your certificate by emailing tmc1@bolton.ac.uk|. You will need to confirm your name, student I.D. number, date of birth, the award, course name and completion date and your current address.
