Many students leave their job hunting until after they have graduated, unaware that many of the best graduate training schemes have finished recruiting. Many major recruiters such as the NHS have closing dates in December recruiting for the following September. Make sure you are making applications throughout your final year.

FREE Journalism workshops
Aspiring reporters interested in a career in newspapers/magazines can enrol for a free journalism workshop staged at the newsroom of national press agency News Associates. This practical three-hour session will get you working on your own stories and there will be a chance to meet News Associates tutors, reporters and editors. Each attendee will get individual feedback and time will also be set aside for career advice. The workshops are staged on Fridays 10.30am – 1.30pm. News associates offer 20 and 40 week NCTJ accredits courses so this is a taster for their full time courses.

Fulbright Scholoarships
USA Grad School Day| provides students with an insider's view of how to successfully navigate the US university postgraduate admissions process. Fulbright advisors and experts in the field will cover a variety of topics including application components, admissions exams, choosing the right institution and funding opportunities, including the Fulbright Awards| for 2011-12. This annual event should not be missed by anyone considering postgraduate study in the US! Graduate Talent Pool -
This scheme is now open to new graduates looking for work. The package of measures to help combat graduate unemployment will include opportunities for both paid and unpaid work experience in the public, private and not-for-profit sectors. Under the scheme, graduates already claiming Job Seekers' Allowance will be eligible to receive it for up to 13 weeks while on an unpaid placement. All 2009 graduates from UK universities are eligible to apply if they are from countries within the EEA. graduatetalentpool.direct.gov.uk| to register for placements.

Help for unemplolyed graduates
Job-seekers can now get extra help from a Manchester Metropolitan University scheme called TalentPlus. Summer leavers are being invited to enrol on a free three-week course to sharpen their job hunting skills and improve their personal employability. On completion, they are matched to an employer in a paid or unpaid work placement for up to six months, or offered help to start their own business. Graduate work experience with Step Enterprise -
The Shell Step project which finds work experience placements for undergraduates has now been extended to offer short term work experience projects to recent graduates. If your CV is lacking relevant work experience then call into the Careers library and find out how to apply or visit. www.shellstep.org.uk |The programme for graduate candidates will be the same as for undergraduates, namely a constructive project based placement in an SME for 8-12 weeks. They will benefit from the same induction, review and mentoring process and be given the same support material. They will attend a local awards day, write a project report and make a presentation just like the undergraduate candidates. And they will receive a Shell Step programme certificate at the end of their placement, recognising their participation and achievements.
