As a result of Government legislation all Higher Education Institutions who offer courses where students come into contact with children or vulnerable adults are required to ensure that these students obtain an Enhanced Disclosure via the Criminal Records Bureau Disclosure process.
The following explains how the disclosure process works and guidance and information on how to complete the process.
What is an Enhanced Disclosure?
An Enhanced Disclosure is a document containing information held by the Police and government departments. It can be used by employers and voluntary organisations to make a safer recruitment decision. The Criminal Records Bureau is an executive agency of the Home Office. The disclosure service offers organisations a means to check the background of applicants to ensure that they do not have a history that would make them unsuitable for posts they are trying to fill. Enhanced Disclosures provide details of a persons criminal record including convictions, cautions, reprimands, and warnings held on the Police National Computer (PNC). Where local Police records contain additional information that may be relevant to the post, the Chief Officer of the Police may also release this information. The disclosure will also contain details from lists held by the Department of Health (DH) and the Department of Education and Skills (DfES) of those considered unsuitable for this type of work.
How do I apply for a Disclosure?
To apply for an enhanced disclosure you should complete the CRB application form which can be obtained from Student Services. If you are studying for a PGDE or PDE course you should receive the CRB pack with your offer letter.
The CRB cannot currently access overseas criminal records or other relevant information as part of its Disclosure service. If you have lived overseas for a duration of time you should check with the CRB if you should submit additional information with your application form. The CRB provides guidance on how you can get further information.
Payment
Please note that no payment is required at this stage for full-time PGDE and PDE students. Payment is made on behalf of the University of Bolton. The cost of £48 will be deducted from the first bursary payment in October/ March this covers the administration and processing of the application form.
If you are applying for part-time PGDE or PDE the cost will be met by your academic department.
Online Tracking Service
The online tracking service provides students and staff with a facility to track the progress of their disclosure application form. The service is free of charge and you will need to know two pieces of information in order to track your application:
1) The Disclosure application form reference number(this can be provided from the CRB administrator at the University)
2) The applicants date of birth
The tracking service will tell you what stage in the process your application has reached. If the Disclosure has already been printed, it will tell you the date this was carried out. You should visit www.crb.gov.uk||
