Applying for a new passport
If your passport has expired or is due to expire whilst you are in the UK it may be possible for you to apply for a new passport in the UK. Your country’s embassy in London will be able to advise you of the process. The Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) webpages lists the embassies in London and includes the address, telephone number and website details.
You should apply for a new passport in good time. If you are in the UK with an expired passport you will have difficulty returning home in the event of an emergency.
Once you have recieved the new passport you must bring it to the Student Centre where a member of staff will take a scanned copy and update your student record.
Entry Clearance Vignettes
If your visa is in your expired passport and your embassy allows you to keep the expired passport you will need to carry both documents when you are travelling.
However if you are planning to work in the UK or you wish to rent a house form a landlord you will need to apply to transfer the condition of your visa. The Entry clearance sticker in your expired passport will not be acceptable evidence of your permission to be in the UK in these circumstances.
If your visa is in your expired passport and your embassy retain the passport you will need to apply to transfer your visa. You can do this by completing form ‘TOC’ Transfer of Conditions. This application costs £223 from April 2016 and you will be required to provide Biometric information and will be issued with a Biometric Residence Permit (BRP).
Once you have received the new BRP you must bring it to the Student Centre where a member of staff will take a scanned copy and update your student record.
