Record of Success in 2010

Monday 02 August 2010

The University of Bolton's Business Support and Development unit [BSDU] has achieved another record year of supporting local business in the 12 months to 31 July 2010.

"The Consultancy and Training statistics are make very good reading", reports Mike Lomas, Director of Business Development.

  • 39% increase in the number of businesses assisted
  • 33% increase in the fee earning revenue
  • Business acquisition rate following quotation, up from 57% to 83%

The BSDU's lead consultant Ted Martin says, "we have seen a significant increase in the training and support provided to help companies improve their use of Sage's computerised accounting software"

The North West Development Agency's, Innovation Voucher scheme has also enabled the university to attract new clients who have needed help in developing database applications that improve their management of customer service and financial control.

Mike Lomas adds, "for a business to survive and grow in the current economic conditions, they need all the help we can give.  Very often it all starts with a no-obligation meeting with one of our business consultants who are trained to quickly identify the key issues and suggest possible solutions.  A plan is prepared and then generally implemented within a matter of weeks."

The BSDU strongly believes in reacting quickly to a client's request for help.  Ted Martin claims their approach is immediate and reactive.  "Once we get a call on our one-stop shop hot-line, 01204 374874, we will respond within 2 working days and aim to meet the client for the first time within a further 5 days.  Businesses are not prepared to wait around for some convenient time that suits other academic institutions.  Here at Bolton, timing is everything and we can and will work to our client's timescales."

The University of Bolton would like to acknowledge the support it receives from the brokers at Business Link North West who are often a clients' first point of contact with a  business support agency.  "We are proud to be able to make our contribution to the regeneration of the North West's business economy by helping companies take a step forward", concludes Mike Lomas.
