East Bolton Regeneration is an SRB6 funded project which aims to address issues of social exclusion and community safety in East Bolton. The Sport, Play and Recreation Strategy seeks to use sport and activity to develop communities in East Bolton. In keeping with SRB principles, community consultation in the planning and implementation of the Strategy is crucial. The Department has been asked to undertake an evaluation of the processes through which the Strategy was planned and implemented. This is being undertaken through field work in East Bolton, particularly amongst groups and organisations with a leisure-orientation, to assess the extent to which community involvement occurred. These include not only sports clubs but youth organisations and play groups. The evaluation is being undertaken with reference to current social policies and theories and is assessing the extent to which the intervention has developed social capital and community cohesion, and by extension, community sustainability.
