The recent concerns about child obesity, anti-social behaviour and poor performance in global sporting events have raised interest in ways of encouraging young people to become more actively involved in sport. The government has set a target of every school pupil having two hours of high quality physical education each week within the curriculum and two hours of activity beyond school in a sport club. Bolton Council has set a challenging public service agreement target of 90% compliance with this national target. The Department has been asked to undertake field research in schools in Bolton to identify potential barriers to the attainment of this target and to suggest methods of practice that would overcome these.
