Workshops for PGR Supervisors -

'Research Ethics'

Date:     Friday 20th April 2012

It is vital that the interest of any human participants or the subjects of any human data or material are adequately protected in the consideration of research proposals.  Evidence that we consider the ethical dimensions of research is also an important element in any external scrutiny of research proposals and of the University's research governance framework.  This workshop will explain the University's Research Ethics Framework, including: participant information and the principle of informed consent; the application procedure for research ethics approval; typical case studies, including: the application and committee consideration processes for clinical research investigations; the use of deception; others.

Intellectual Property Seminar and Workshop

Wilson Gunn, one of the UK’s leading practices of Patent and Trade Mark Attorneys, is to host an Intellectual Property Seminar and Workshop at the University on Friday 27th April 2012.

SESSION 1 - concentrating on technical innovations and answering the following questions:

•     What can/cannot be patented?

•     Inventorship and ownership

•     The importance of confidentiality

•     How to protect a patentable invention
 

SESSION 2 – looking at other IP rights that are applicable to a wide range of technical and non-technical creations

•     Design rights/ registered designs

•     Copyright

•     How to secure protection

'New Models for the UK Doctorate'

Date:       Friday 18th May 2012

There are now a variety of routes that can be followed to achieve a doctorate, including PhD By Published Work and PhD By Practice, as well as the normal route 'by thesis'.  This workshop will familiarise participants with who these new routes might be suitable for, how they work, the pros and cons, and experiences to date.  Inclusing: PhD by Professional Practice, facilitating an action and learning set of professionals in the quest for academic engagement, (how to herd cats)
