Out and about in Bolton

History

Bolton is full of history and well worth exploring. Check out www.visit-bolton.com| for more information on Bolton’s industrial heritage including the Barrow Bridge village for workers and Hall i’th’ Wood where Samuel Crompton invented the Spinning Mule in 1779.

Head for the hills

Over half of the borough of Bolton is made up of beautiful countryside - ideal for walking, cycling and outdoor pursuits. The wild West Pennine Moors are only 2 miles from Bolton town centre and the university, and are used by students for walking, climbing, sailing, canoeing and other outdoor pursuits.

Go and explore the remains of Lord Leverhulme's gardens, the two cruck barns, the ruined replica of Liverpool Castle and of course Rivington Pike.

Retail Therapy

Bolton town centre offers all the main high street names from Debenhams, HMV, Top Shop, Waterstones and M&S plus independent, smaller shops offering everything from designer labels to fair trade clothes and accessories. Most of the shopping area in the town centre is pedestrianised, so wandering around town is relaxed and enjoyable. Walk a few minutes from campus and you will find supermarkets and Bolton’s famous food market.

There are also a number of retail parks within easy reach of campus including Middlebrook| at Horwich, one of the largest retail centres in the North West. The largest, the Trafford Centre| is just a 15 minute drive away. Manchester| offers still more shops including Harvey Nicks and Selfridges.
