Help out at our university Summer Schools

What is a Summer School?

Don’t be fooled by the name – Summer Schools can happen at any time of the year. Basically, a Summer School is an event to introduce year 10, 11 and 12 (ages 14-17) students to higher education and university life. They are aimed at students who would not normally be expected to progress to higher education and are designed to raise aspirations and show that going to university is achievable and desirable.

Why do we need current students to help?

The University of Bolton has a dedicated team of staff who organise and run our School Schools, however, help from current students is also vital to the success of these events. It is important that pupils get the chance to meet real, live university students as this helps them overcome some of their misconceptions and assumptions about university life. They can ask questions and find out more about the types of courses on offer, life outside of study and what it takes to make it to university.

What's involved?

Summer Schools involve lots of different activities with current students assisting mainly with recreational activities and as general support for the staff who are organising the event (crowd control). Events may be held at the university or at other locations and may involve overnight (or longer) stays away from home.
