Leave Entitlement

Academic Staff

Holidays

The academic holiday year runs from 1 September to 31 August.  In addition to statutory Bank Holidays, 5 local discretionary holidays and days when the University is closed in the interests of efficiency, you are entitled to *35 working days paid holiday during the course of the holiday year (pro-rata if part-time or appointed ater 1 September); unused holiday entitlement may not be carried forward into the next holiday year, except by agreement with the University.

(*Pro-rata to 7 of your working weeks if appointed on a fractional basis).

In the holiday year in which your employment commmences, your holiday entitlement will accrue on a pro-rata basis for each complete month of service at the rate of 2.93 days per month (pro-rata if part-time); on the termination of your employment, holiday pay will be worked out on a similar basis.  In the event that the amount of holiday taken exceeds the pro-rata entitlement calculated to the date of termination, the balance may be deducted from any terminal payments due, including payment in lieu of notice.

The timing of your holidays is subject to agreement with your Head.  Subject to the organisational requirements of the University, you may request that up to 6 weeks of your normal holiday entitlement be taken in one continuous period, and such a request will not be unreasonably refused.

Wherever possible, detailed holiday schedules for individual lecturers will be made as soon as reasonably practicable after the beginning of each academic year; in determining the holiday scheme, appropriate consideration should be given to the personal circumstances of lecturers and to requests to attend conferences or courses that are held in normal holiday periods.

Professional Support Staff

Leave Entitlement: 52 weeks per annum appointments

The University holiday year runs from 1 September to 31 August.  In addition to the Statutory, Bank and Public holidays (calculated on a pro-rata basis for part-time staff working less that the five day week/or full year), you are also entitled to *26 normal working days paid leave per annum which includes local holidays (pro-rata if you work part-time or less that a fay day week).  (*For employees in post at 11 December 1995 the entitlement to annual leave is 28 days).

You are entitled to five days additional leave (calculated on a pro-rata basis if working part-time or less than a 5 day week) from the commencement of the leave year following completion of five years service.

In the holiday year in which your employment commences or terminates, your holiday entitlement will accrue on a pro-rata basis for each complete month of service.  On termination of your employment, if you have exceeded your accrued holiday entitlement, the University will be entitled to deduct the excess from any sums due to you, including payments of salary.  If you have any unused holiday entitlement, the University may require you to take it during your notice period or may, alternatively, pay you the appropriate sum in lieu thereof.  Pay in lieu of a days' holiday will be calculated by dividing your monthly pay by the number of days in the month.

All leave must be agreed by the line manager.  Requests for taking leave should be received by your line manager at least one week prior to the period of leave.  The University may require you to take some of your holiday entitlement at specific times of the year.  You will be required to allocate three days of your leave to be used at the Christmas/New Year period.  Occasionally this requirement may be reduced to two days or increased to four days.  Unused leave entitlement cannot normally be carried over from one leave year to the next unless there are exceptional circumstances and prior approval has been obtained.  Further details of current practice in the University with regard to leave are obtainable from the Personnel Office.

Leave Entitlement: 40 week appointments

The University holiday year runs from 1 September to 31 August.  The working year for Professional Support staff on 40 week contracts is from 1 September to 31 August.  Your 40 working weeks per annum will be negotiated between you and your line manager to maintain the service in your department/service/unit.  In addition to your basic salary you will recieve 6 weeks pay in respect of annual leave entitlement.

If you commence employment after 1 September you will be required to work pro-rata to 40 weeks for your first year i.e...

Cleaners

The University holiday year runs from 1 September to 31 August.  In addition to the Statutory, Bank and Public Holidays, you are also entitled to 22 normal working days paid leave per annum, which includes local holidays (pro-rata if you work less than five days per week).

You are entitled to five days addtional leave (pro-rata if working under a five day week) from the commencement of the leave year following completion of five years service.

In the holiday year in which your employment commences or terminates, your holiday entitlement will accrue on a pro-rata basis for each complete month of service at the rate of 1.83 days per month.  On terminiation of your employement, if you have exceeded your accrued holiday entitlement, the University will be entitled to deduct the excess from any sums due to you, including payments of salary.  If you have any unused holiday entitlement, the University may require you to take it during your notice period or may, alternatively, pay you the appropriate sum in lieu thereof.  Pay in lieu of a day's holiday will be calculated by dividing your monthly pay by the number of days in the month.

Casual/Temporary Supply Staff

Leave Entitlement

You are entitled to paid leave of 28 days over a full calendar year.  This entitlement includes any bank holidays.  Your leave entitlement will be calculated on a pro-rata basis if you work part-time or do not work the full calendar year.

Should your employment terminate, your outstanding accrued holiday entitlement will be paid as at your termination date.  You will accrue annual leave on the bgasis of 2 days for each completed month.

If you have exceeded your accrued holiday entitlement, the University will be entitled to deduct the excess from your payment of salary.
