Academic Staff
Duties & Hours of Work
The normal working week (full-time) is 37 hours per week. You are expected to work such hours that are reasonably necessary in order to fulfil your duties and responsibilities. Those duties include teaching and tutorial guidance (including preparation and marking), research and other forms of scholarly activity, examining, curriculum development, administration and related activities. You are expected to work flexibly and efficiently, and to maintain the highest professional standards in discharging your responsibilities, and in promoting and implementing the corporate policies of the University.
Your formal scheduled teaching responsibilities should not exceed 18 hours in any one week or a total of 550 hours in the teaching year (full-time). However, this provision will not apply in subject areas where the nature of the curriculum and teaching style make it inappropriate, such as aspects of Teacher Education, Art, Design, Performing Arts, Music etc
Working Year
Your teaching year will not normally exceed 38 weeks, of which 2 weeks will be spent on teaching-related administration. While some flexibility may be required in organising your teaching year, you will not (except with your prior agreement) be required to undertake more than 14 consecutive weeks of teaching at any one time, and any significant variations to the normal pattern of the teaching year in the University will only be made after consultation with the staff and the recognised lecturer unions.
Professional Support Staff
Duties & Hours of Work
The basic working week for full-time professional support staff is 36.25 hours per week. Normal hours of work are 8.45am to 5.00pm, Monday to Friday. Part-time hours/working patterns are determined/agreed by your line manager.
Cleaners
The basic working week is 17.5 hours. Cleaners based in Facilities (Site Operations) normally work between 6.00am and 9.30am, Monday to Friday; cleaners based in Student Services (Student Halls) normally work between 9.00am and 12.30pm.
Research Staff
Duties & Hours of Work
Your basic working week is one of 37 hours, Monday to Friday. You may be required to teach up to 6 hours per week, which will not include more than one evening per week. The Dean of Faculty/Head of Service/Unit should be consulted before a teaching load and timetable are agreed.
Part-time Hourly-paid Lecturers
Duration of Appointment
The duration of any part-time lecturing appointment will, in no circumstances, exceed the length of the teaching year at the University. Appointments will not normally be made for more than a term of semester as appropriate but, in certain circumstances, the appointment may be for a shorter period e.g. where the part-time lecturer has been appointed to undertake certain teaching duties arising from the absence of another lecturer or becasue of a temporary vacancy in the full-time teaching establishment at the University.
Temporary Supply/Casual Staff
Hours of Work
The pattern of work/working hours are to be negotiated with your line manager. If you work longer than 6 hours per day, you are entitled to an unpaid rest break of 20 minutes. This should be taken by prior agreement with your line manager.
Period of Work
Start and end dates are to be agreed with your line mager. However, they should normally not last for more than 4 weeks without subsequent agreement from the staffing committee. Becaue the need for this work fluctuates, the dates and times you are offered may be varied (on 24 hours notice).
