Absence

Substantive Staff

Absence from Work

If you are unable to come to work for any reason, you must inform your line manager before 10.00am on the first day of absence.  If notifying the University you should indicate the reason for your absence and its likely duration.

You will be entitled to such sick pay as is prescribed from time to time in the University's Sick Pay policy, subject to the University's rules relating to the notification of sickness absence.  Further details of the scheme are available from Personnel Service.

All days of absence through sickness must be covered by a medical certificate.  For the first seven days, a University self certificate will be acceptable.  For illnesses of more than seven days, a doctor's certificate must also be produced on the eighth day and weekly thereafter.

If your absence through illness lasts for less than a working week, you should complete a self certificate (available from Personnel Service) on return to work.

Because of the rules relating to the payment of Statutory Sick Pay (SSP) it is important that your certificates indicate actual dates of sickness even if they are sometimes for days when you would not have worked, e.g. weekends and public holidays.

Maternity Leave

The University operates a maternity leave/maternity pay scheme in accordance with the Employment Protection (Consolidation) Act 1978 as amended by the Trade Union Reform and Employment Rights Act (TURERA) 1993.  Further details of the scheme's rules/provisions may be obtained from Personnel ice upon request.

Part-time Hourly-paid Lecturing Staff

Non-Availability

If it is not possible for a part-time lecturer to undertake part-time teaching duties at any particular class meeting because of illness or for any other reason the part-time lecturer should immediately notifiy the appropriate Dean of Faculty accordingly so that they may arrange for a suitable person to act as substitute for that particular class meeting.  A part-time lecturer who is absent from duty because of illness covered by a medical certificate may not resume duty until they have received a final medical certificate from their doctor indicating that they are fit to resume work.

Sick Pay

A part-time lecturer is not eligible to receive occupational sick pay but may be eligible to receive statutory sick pay (SSP) provided that they fulfill the HMRC criteria and submit the appropriate medical certificates to the Personnel Service.  Further information is available from the Personnel Office.
