Adoption Leave

Adoption leave and pay will give eligible employees the right to take paid leave when a child is newly placed for adoption. Adoption leave and pay are available to:

  • Individuals who adopt
  • One member of a couple where they adopt jointly (the couple must choose which partner takes adoption leave).

Annual Leave

  • Basic annual leave for full-time academic staff is 35 days (plus 8 statutory bank holidays).
  • Basic annual leave for full-time professional support staff is 26 days (plus 8 statutory bank holidays).
  • Basic annual leave for operations/cleaning is 22 days (plus 8 statutory bank holidays).
  • Annual leave and bank holidays for part-time/term-time staff is calculated on a pro-rata basis.
  • Additional leave is determined on service with the university.

Car Parking

New members of staff are eligible for a staff ID card which enables them to access the, free for use, University car park.  Car parking is on a first come basis. 

Chaplaincy / Religious Worship

A University multi-faith Chaplaincy exists to promote the spiritual life of the whole community of the University.  A calendar of festivals and notable dates and services is included in the weekly all-staff bulletin.  There is also a multi-faith room for staff and students for quiet prayer, thought and reflection.

Childcare Vouchers

The University offers employees the opportunity to participate in a salary sacrifice scheme and purchase childcare vouchers via Sodexho Pass, giving employees savings on their tax and national insurance contributions; for futher information, please contact Sharon Thompson| (x3584) from the Personnel Unit.

Christmas Shutdown

There is a University closure in the week between Christmas and New Year.  Professional Support staff are expected to use 3 days from their annual leave entitlement.  Academic staff are given the Christmas break as part of their entitlement.

Compassionate Leave

  • Compassionate leave of up to 5 days - without the loss of pay - is given on the death of immediate member of family: partent/guardian, brother/sister, child or spouse/partner/civil partner.
  • Paid time off will also be granted to attend the funeral of other close relatives/friends i.e. grandparents etc.

Discretionary Days

Academic staff are given 5 days (which are not part of their annual leave entitlement) discretionary leave days.  Members of support staff may be entitled to paid discretionary days, at their managers discretion.

Emergency Childcare

The University offers emergency childcare provision for staff who may be in need of emergency nursery places, childminders or nannies.  It is a service provided by Sodexho Pass, who are the childcare voucher providers, but it is a separate service.

Employee Assistance Provider (EAP)

The University pay for all staff (and their immediate family members) to have access to a free 24 hour telephone helpline.  It offers life management and personal support service to help staff deal with both everyday situations and more serious problems covering financial, legal, relationships, family care, work and more.

Eyecare Vouchers:
The University offers free eye-screening for all staff who use display screen equipment in the workplace through Specsavers Opticians.

Flexible Working:

- You can use this form to make an application to work flexibly under the right provided in law to help eligible employees care for their children. Before completing this form, you should first read the guidance notes “Request for Flexible Working” and confirm that you are eligible to make a request by completing the section below. 

- The University doesnt run a flexitime system at present, although our Library are currently piloting a Flexi-time System.

Increments:
Staff increment up the spine (where applicable) in August. New staff in post prior to 01 Feb will increment up the spine in August of the same year,  for those appointed after 01 Feb the increment will take place in August the following year, staff must be in post for 6 months before incremental progression is applicable. 

There is a pay-award (cost of living) review each August (although the award may not take place in August - if at all).

Induction:
All new staff are given a 20-25 minute induction in the Personnel Office with Simon Booth| (x3574) on their first day at the University.  A full induction programme then commences with the aim  for the new member of staff to visit all the relevant services and feel comfortable with the University and with their role.

Library Services:
New members of staff are eligible for a staff ID card which enables them to access Library Services (it also gives access to the staff car parks).  ID cards are issued from the Library as part of the induction.

Long Service Awards:
A Long Service Award Scheme exists for all staff who have completed 20 or 30 years' service with the University.  The award usually consists of a commemorative photograph with the Vice Chancellor, luncheon (with guest) and the award of a cheque for £200.

Maternity Leave:
- The length of ordinary maternity leave is 26 weeks entitlement, regardless of length of service with the University.
- The length of additional maternity leave is 26 weeks entitlement, regardless of length of service with the University.

Medical Appointments:
- Staff received time off with pay to attend hospital appointmnts; if the employee receives treatment that necessitates further time off work, this will be treated as sickness absence. 
- Staff are not expected to make doctors/dental appointments during working hours.  If appointments can only be arranged during working hours, then time off with pay will normally be allowed.

Medical Insurance:
The University has made available to staff Private Medical Insurance on a discounted voluntary basis via AXA PPP Healthcare Ltd.  The Universities and Colleges Scheme provides members with a choice of three medical plans:  Premier, Classic Six and Key Plan.

Paternity Leave:
Fathers are entitled to two weeks off after the birth of a child.  The first week is paid at full pay and the second week is paid at Statutory Paternity Pay.

Pay-awards - when agreed - are given to all staff: Academic , Professional Support and Manual in August each year.

Pension Scheme:
- Academic staff are automatically entered into the Teachers Pension Scheme, which is a final salary scheme.  If you are a new member who has membership of the Universities Superannuation Scheme (USS) you have the opportunity to stay in that scheme.  If you do not wish to be a memeber, please opt-out by writing to the Personnel Office.
- Professional Support and Manual staff are automatically entered into the Local Government Pension Scheme (LGPS) which is also a final salary scheme.  If you do not wish to be a member, please opt-out by writing to the Personnel Office.

Sport England (also see "Sports & Recreation" below)
This initiative is part of our holistic approach to health.  The emphasis is on engaging staff so that they adhere to their chosen activities as well as monitoring their progress, to enable lifelong participation.  Greater access to sport and physical activity is now provided through extended opening hours at the Sports Centre with incentives of reduced fees for classes and attendee of the month awards.  Activities available are trampolining, boxercise, body toning, circuit training, lunchtime walks, etc with summer activities including canoeing, sailing and horse riding amongst others.  This initiative was launched on 8 May 2006 and to date 180 staff are signed up.  All sports and physical activity classes are advertised in the Staff Weekly Bulletin or on the Sports Centre website.  You may also contract Pozz Lonsdale|, Sports Centre Manager (x3639) or Mollie Percival|, Sport & Activities Officer (x3637).

Sports & Recreation:
Students, staff and the wider community are all welcome at the University of Bolton Sport & Recreation Service.  The Sport and Recreation Service team believes a healthy mind needs a healthy body to go with it.  Activities are promoted on the website and the Staff Weekly Bulletin.  You may also contract Pozz Lonsdale|, Sports Centre Manager (x3639) or Mollie Percival|, Sport & Activities Officer (x3637).

Staff Development:

Staff are entitled to request Unpaid Leave once they have used up their annual leave entitlement.  It is at their manager's discretion to recommend/not recommend approval by the Personnel Service.

Well-Being:
Throughout the year a number of staff WellBeing events, in conjunction with Sport & Recreation Services, are run giving staff the opportunity to benefit from complimentary therapies such as Indian Head Massage, Reflexology, Massage etc.  Any staff wellbeing/health events are promoted in the Staff Weekly Bulletin.  Please also see Shirley Silcock, HR Community Officer (x3573) and/or the WellBeing pages of this site.  Complimentary therapies are available on-site for reflexology and acupresure (on-site massage) plus chiropody appointments available every Wednesday from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.  Reflexology and chiropody is £20 per appointment.  Accupressure (on-site massage) is £15 per appointment.  Please make any appointments with Mike Duviau|, In-Touch (01772 457880 / 07970 448806).

Wireless Access for all:
Staff and students can have free wireless network access, on campus - and around town!  Anyone with a wireless capable laptop or PDA can register by picking up a voucher from the Library.
