Schools and colleges are heading for Bolton Wanderers tomorrow (Wednesday 2 November) to take part in a University of Bolton event that questions the role of sport.
Funded by the Economic and Social Research Council, What Does Sport Say About Society? is part of the National Festival of Social Science.
The event, to be held at the Reebok Stadium, will look at issues such as, why do wags get almost as much media attention as their football player partners? And what makes a sporting role model – a reputation for fair play or commanding the biggest salary?
Said organiser, Dr Liz Such, Senior Lecturer in Leisure, Sport and Physical Activity at the University of Bolton: ‘We have around 50 pupils and students from across the town coming to the event on Wednesday – we’re looking forward to hearing what our young people have to say about sport and its influence on them and society in general.
‘We’re also aiming to provoke thought about sport as a career opportunity, not just as a player or athlete but within the professions around sport – from coaching and sports management to the jobs promoting sport in the community.’
