A new scholarship that gives University of Bolton graduates the chance to live, work and study in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) has been awarded to James Corner.
The Ras al Khaimah (RAK) Marriott Scholarship is funded by the Rotary Club of Bolton Le-Moors. As well as giving James the chance to study and work at Bolton’s UAE campus, the aim is for him to build lasting relationships between the University and local trade and industry.
James said: ‘The main focus of my time here is to raise the profile of the University through the development of links within the local business community. In time, the aim is to utilise these links to create internship posts for students at the RAK campus.’
James joined the University of Bolton through an access course before earning a first-class honours degree in Psychology. After graduating in 2010, he worked in the mental health industry before a conversation with a tutor led him to apply for the scholarship.
He said: ‘I was attracted to the role for a number of reasons; I thought it would be a fantastic opportunity to broaden my horizons whilst adding international business experience to my CV.’
Coming from the small market town of Bishop Auckland in County Durham, broadening his geographical and cultural horizons was a priority, as was studying.
James added: ‘Working in RAK appealed as it is a culturally diverse and developing community. But the role also involves undertaking a postgraduate qualification, which caught my eye. I enjoy studying and to study in the UAE is a unique opportunity.’
James sees the RAK campus as a vital part of University’s future. He said: ‘I feel that it is very important for the University of Bolton to have a flagship campus overseas. It can exploit new opportunities and it allows us to nurture our international influence, profile, status and reputation.’
He believes his own scholarship role is also crucial in helping the University cement its international presence. He added: ‘Through building alliances with other institutions, partners and private sector companies, I can help boost our profile and reputation. With that, access to research opportunities will grow, thus supporting the long-term growth and development of our University.’
David Tomlinson is Secretary for the Marriott Trust, he said: 'The Marriott Fund of the Rotary Club of Bolton Le Moors are delighted to be involved with this Scholarship. The Club have been associated with Rotary International Ambassadorial Scholarships for over 25years.
'This work involves the development of postgraduate students through academic study, contacts with business communities in conjunction with Rotary Clubs in the local area and above all the development of international understanding with outstanding individuals like James.'
