Leaping into university life – age 10!
Monday 05 July 2010
Primary school children in Bolton got a taste of university life recently when they came to the University of Bolton as part of an event aiming to raise aspirations.
I Can Make it Happen was organised by the University, Bolton at Home and Bolton Council for 170 year-six pupils aged 10-11, who took part in a week-long series of activities which culminated in a presentation of certificates at Bolton Town Hall.
Activities at the University included a tour of campus and meeting employees from various professions who they quizzed on their work and how this had a positive impact on their lifestyle.
At the University pupils also met Aimhigher Co-ordinator, Ros Birch. 'Many of the aims of this project tie in with Aimhigher targets for young people, mainly from backgrounds of little or no higher education heritage,' said Ros.
'As Aimhigher Coordinator at the University, I more than welcome the opportunity to reach out to primary school pupils. Giving an early taste of university life and the possible careers a university education can provide for them in the future may inspire and motivate them to achieve things they never thought possible in later life.'
Aimhigher is the Government's initiative to widen participation in higher education in England through activities that raise the aspirations of young people.
