Student eco designs showcase at major festival
Monday 02 November 2009
Emerging designers at the University of Bolton have been showcasing their latest creations alongside work by professionals in a major design show.
Interior and fashion accessories by third year textile and surface design students and graduates were on display at the Eco Design Show, in Liverpool from 30 October to 1November.
Around 2,000 visitors, including design professionals and representatives from the textiles industry, attended the show, which opened the ten-day Liverpool Design Festival involving leading designers, retailers and national design organisations.
The students' designs were created as part of their final year studies focusing on the development of their professional practice. All of the exhibited work had to incorporate ecological elements in its production such as using recycled fabrics or handmade papers, low waste and low energy processes, and minimal chemical consumption, fixation and washing treatments.
Donna Claypool, Programme Leader, said: 'This show was a great opportunity for our students to showcase their work alongside professional practitioners. Incorporating ecological issues into students' designs is an excellent way of stretching their abilities and seeing how their practice is affected. Our students have shown they can rise to that challenge.'
Taking part in the show is the latest success for eco designers on the textile / surface design course. Previous Bolton students have been prize winners in the 'eco' section of the prestigious Bradford Textile Society Awards in the past three years.
