'More pedal power'
Tuesday 03 March 2009
The University of Bolton is holding a one-day conference to encourage more people to get out of their cars and on their bikes.
The conference, on 7 April 2009, has been organised by Dr John Parkin, Reader in Transport Engineering and Planning at the University.
Specialist speakers from cycling organisations, user groups and local authorities will be meeting to share their experiences and review projects aimed at encouraging commuter cycling.
Dr Parkin said: 'There are so many reasons why it's good for people to get on their bikes – cycling is a lot cheaper than running a car, it helps to keep you fit, it's environmentally friendly and it's a lot easier to park your bike.
'There is a growing need for sustainable transport solutions, especially in urban areas where traffic congestion is now a major problem. This conference is an opportunity to share and review the different practices that are being introduced to encourage more commuters to cycle.'
There will be presentations, case studies and workshops on a number of themes, including cycling and travel plans, the health and productivity benefits of cycling, cycling-rail integration, workplace cycle challenges, employer-assisted purchase of bicycles and bike sharing schemes.
