Helping Dublin get on its bike!
Thursday 15 May 2008
University of Bolton Reader in Transport Engineering and Planning Dr John Parkin is helping Dublin get on its bike with Dublin Cycling Campaign and Irish Transport Minister Noel Dempsey.
Dr Parkin will be speaking at the Dublin Cycling Campaign (DCC) Annual Lecture today (Thursday 15 May 2008), delivering his paper on Planning for Pedals. Minister for Transport Noel Dempsey will introduce the talk.
The purpose of the DCC's annual lecture is to stimulate debate and discussion on how to promote cycling in Dublin city.
Said Dr Parkin: 'The lecture aims to share transportation professionals' knowledge of the latest thinking in the field and to facilitate communication between the wider cycling community and traffic engineers, transport planners, urban planners, architects and public health professionals.'
The lecture comes at an opportune time as the Department of Transport is currently preparing a National Cycling Policy. '
Dr Parkin's talk will include explaining the importance of good planning for cyclists – and pedestrians – by creating cycle routes that do not take cyclists on long detours.
'We often find cyclists are expected to take long detours when their cycle routes are led by the traffic management needs of cars. Good cycle-friendly planning means making trips as direct as possible for cyclists,' added Dr Parkin.
The Dublin Cycling Campaign has represented cyclists in Dublin for more than 15 years.
