University partners in UK cycling research programme
Thursday 11 December 2008
The University of Bolton has been selected as a partner in a three year government programme to monitor cycling levels in UK towns.
Staff in the School of the Built Environment and Engineering will support the work of Sustrans, the UK's leading sustainable transport charity, in monitoring cycling levels for the Department of Transport and Cycling England.
One city and 17 towns have been selected for the project which aims to promote increased bike use, especially in towns and cities, across the UK. Sustrans will monitor the impact of the programme on cycling in the selected areas.
Dr John Parkin, Reader in Transport Engineering and Planning at the University of Bolton, will provide specialist advice and support to Sustrans. He said: 'We started working with Sustrans when they won the original contract to monitor six cycling towns in 2006. Our involvement in this larger programme is a great opportunity for us, here at the University, to continue this work which will, hopefully, show how concerted investment in cycling will lead to increased use of this health giving and environmentally friendly form of transport.'
Health promotion consultants, Cavill Associates, will also be working with Sustrans on the programme.
