Award acclaim for student's IT company

Thursday 28 June 2007

A company started by a University of Bolton student and his long-time friend has just succeeded in becoming a runner-up in the Daily Telegraph/cpp Trailblazers awards 2007.

The competition has been searching for companies with new ways of coping with modern living, companies who help remove the hassle from peoples' lives, simplify the complexities of everyday living and leave people free to enjoy life.

John Sewell, a student on the MBA Small Business at the University of Bolton and his colleague Gary Dodson, started Greenlight Computers with a simple aim, to fix computer problems.

In the competition the team had to present to a panel of judges in a Dragon's Den format. The judges consisted of a team of business leaders including Dianne Thompson, CEO of Camelot, Mike Harris founder of Egg and First Direct and Hamish Ogston founder of CPP. Put under the spotlight the judges asked searching questions, probing the knowledge and capability of each team.

Said Greenlight Director, John: 'We were a little apprehensive, but felt confident because we know our business and have a well thought out model and strategy.' The judges commented on how Greenlight was competing in a strong market.

The awards ceremony was held at The Ivy in London. After receiving the runners-up prize Gary said: 'Tthis was great for us, we really enjoyed it. Taking part has made a significant impact to us already. Our business has just competed at a national level, it was judged by eminent business people, and found to be one of the best in the country. That helps give us confidence that we are on the right path.'

Added John: 'We see solving problems as our service. Our customers do not need to understand how a computer works to make sense of what we do. They have a problem with their computer and they need it solving. We solve their problems.'

Greenlight will use this national platform to help spread the message that computer service can and should be a personal service, something handled by people you know and trust. John will of course continue to juggle running the business with his studies at the university.
