In step with tradition

Tuesday 26 June 2007

Tradition was honoured at the University of Bolton on Friday (22 June 2007) as the School of the Built Environment and Engineering, led by the Vice Chancellor's office, processed through the town's fish market.

Once a year the lecturers march past bemused shoppers to the good-humoured heckling of the stall holders. They are on their way to watch their students graduate at the degree congregation ceremonies held in the Victoria Hall.

The tradition has been upheld now for more than 30 years. Said Pro Vice Chancellor Karyn Brinkley: 'No one is exactly sure how this tradition began but it is always a lot of fun. All universities have quirky traditions and this is ours.'

Pictured leading the procession is the university's Vice Chancellor, Dr George Holmes and its Mace-Bearer Derek Truffas.
