Speakers Announced for TEDxUniversityofBolton 2017

On the 28 April 2017, the University of Bolton will host its second independent TEDx conference. TED is a nonprofit organization devoted to spreading ideas, usually in the form of short, powerful talks (18 minutes or less). TED began in 1984 as a conference where Technology, Entertainment and Design converged, and today covers almost all topics — from science to business to global issues — in more than 100 languages. The TEDxUniversityofBolton 2017 theme is “Innovate, Integrate, Educate”. Our theme is multidisciplinary and broad; it encompasses a broad range of ideas and approaches which represent some of TED’s core values of forward-thinking, innovation and inspiration.Vivienne Newton

2017 will see various speakers discussing their own ideas and amongst the group will be University of Bolton Graduate and Student Union President Vivienne Newton; along with Skills for life lecturer and Doctorate Postgraduate Sarah Telfer.

Vivienne Newton has studied at the University of Bolton for 6 years, firstly achieving her BA (Hons) in Youth and Community work, then the PGDE and finally her Master’s in Education. Vivienne has a strong passion to work with youth and students, as prior to her studies she also worked in her community, with youth and education and desires
to continue a career in education, teaching and supporting students.

Whilst studying, Vivienne worked part time in the University as a Student Liason Officer and Community Engagement Officer, building her experience within the university and the students union. After graduating last year, Vivienne has taken the role of Student Union President for the Academic year 2016-2017. She is also a member of The Student Engagement Partnership (TSEP) Steering Group and the QAA Student Advisory Board.

Vivienne also volunteers for the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award Scheme group and shows strong support for many animal welfare charities.

Sarah Telfer

Dr Sarah Telfer first graduated in 1988 with her BA (Hons) in Drama, to which she then went on to be a professional actress for seven years in both film and television. She then decided to apply her knowledge to teaching English as a foreign language in the private and public sector, in the UK and across Europe.

Since then, Sarah has achieved various qualifications, including her PGCE, Level 5 Certificate for Adult ESOL subject Specialist and Masters in TESOL; plus, she is currently completing her Doctorate in Education here at the University of Bolton. Sarah’s roles include: the Skills for Life and Teaching Learners with additional needs pathway leader, Skills for life lecturer, Masters in Education Lecturer and Personal tutor. She has influenced the enhancement of electronic Professional Practice Portfolios (PPP) in teacher training through her research interests.

Sarah is also a team co-ordinator for teacher training in the school of Education and Psychology and is a member of the Higher Education Academy (HEA) and the Education and Training Foundation (ETF), NATECLA and NATESOL (Northern association of TESOL).
