Mentoring

The University Mentoring Scheme| provides an opportunity for all new staff (and those new to role) have access to a trained Mentor.

What is the Purpose of Mentoring?

The scheme is to support integration of new staff members into the University generally and into their specific job role and:

  • To enable the Mentee to understand the functions, philosophy and purposes of the Faculty/Department in which the Mentee is working
  • To support the Mentee in reaching effective and efficient performance in their role
  • To support the Mentee in gaining familiarity with the geography, organisational structure and ethos of the University
  • To support the professional development of the Mentee within their specific area of expertise

How Long Does a Mentoring Relationship Last?

Mentoring support will be available for up to one year.

Who Coordinates the Mentoring scheme?

The Mentoring Scheme has been developed and will be coordinated by Tracy Ellis, Lead Mentor, Learning Enhancement & Professional Development Unit.

How are Mentors and Mentees Trained?

Mentors will be provided with appropriate initial training and ongoing support in order to facilitate the implementation of the scheme.

All Mentors will be required to attend two half-day mentoring skills sessions and entors will also be encouraged to undertake CPD in Mentoring.

Mentees will be required to attend a two hour awareness-raising session.

There will be written and online guidance available for all Mentors and Mentees

What Does the Mentoring Role Involve?

  • The Induction Mentor will be an experienced staff member from the University, who is not the line manager of the Mentee
  • The role of the Mentor is to provide appropriate advice, guidance and support to enable Mentees to complete their induction into their role at the University
  • The mentoring relationship should normally last no more than one year (approximately 20 hours of mentoring)
