Software Self-Service Site

The University of Bolton has a self-service software website which allows you to browse and subscribe to software available on-campus. You can add software to your personal profile and use it anywhere on-campus, find where you can use particular software titles and list software assigned to the computer you are using.

Whilst you are looking at the list of software, if you click on software title then you can see details such as the version, if it is the latest version of that software and then way this software has been deployed – if it is virtual or actual. You can subscribe to a piece of software using this site.

MS Office 365 for Education

Office 365 for Education gives students access to Office365 with 1Tb of free storage and MS Office products (Word, Excel, Powerpoint, Outlook, OneNote.

Gives students free development tools for learning, teaching and research. To access MS DreamSpark please visit the link below:

SPSS (Version 20)

SPSS is a computer program used for statistical analysis.

Under the terms of our licence for SPSS, students may obtain a copy of SPSS from the Help Desk in the Library for home use. You may use the program legally for as long as you are a student at the University of Bolton, please sign the agreement on the reverse of the application form to this effect.

How much does it cost?

  • Free for current University of Bolton students and staff members only.

System Requirements

  • The system requirements for SPSS v20 is a 1GHz processor, 1Gb RAM, 900Mb available hard disk space and a DVD drive*. It works with all supported Windows operating systems.

* If your computer does not have a DVD drive then please supply a suitable USB pen drive.

How to apply for a copy of SPSS

You can pick up a copy of SPSS the same day. Simply download and complete the application form below and return it to the Help Desk in person. Alternatively, you can visit the Help Desk whilst you are in the Library and complete the form.

You will need your student ID card to collect your copy of SPSS.

Anti-virus Software

We recommend that you install up to date anti-virus software and anti-spyware software on your computer or mobile device.  You can purchase these or you can try free software, such as AVG

Open Office

Open Office is an open-source office software suite containing word processor, spreadsheet, presentation, graphics, formula editor, and database management applications. OpenOffice's default file format is the OpenDocument Format (ODF).  It can also handle other file formats including those from Microsoft Office. OpenOffice runs on several operating systems.

Operating system updates

It is important that you regularly download and activate updates for your operating system.
