The smart materials and systems group is a true multidisciplinary group that has been providing core and enabling science, engineering and technology advancements in developing smart materials and expanding applications in numerous fields including medical devices, biosensors and diagnostic devices, aerospace, advanced textile and fire retardation.

The group is involved in a number of research activities leading to developing novel devices and unique systems from fibers, films and foams using smart materials and utilising new structures. The major research activities include:
